The Main Exam is the second stage of the UPSC CSE. It is usually held in September or October every year. It consists of nine papers of descriptive type, with a total of 1750 marks. The papers are:

• Essay: In this paper, candidates have to write two essays of 1000-1200 words each on topics of general interest.
• General Studies Paper-I: This paper covers topics such as Indian heritage and culture, history and geography of the world and India.
• General Studies Paper-II: This paper covers topics such as governance, constitution, polity, social justice and international relations.

• Language Paper-I: This paper tests the candidates’ ability to read and write in any one of the 22 official languages of India.
• Language Paper-II: This paper tests the candidates’ ability to read and write in English.

The marks obtained in the Main Exam are counted for the final ranking. However, candidates need to score at least 25% in each of the language papers and a minimum cut-off mark in each of the other papers to qualify for the Interview.

Interview

The Interview is the third and final stage of the UPSC CSE. It is usually held in February or March every year. It consists of a personality test conducted by a board of competent and unbiased observers. The interview carries 275 marks and aims to assess the candidates’ suitability for a career in public service. The interview tests the candidates’ mental alertness, critical thinking, social skills, leadership qualities, moral integrity, etc.

The marks obtained in the Interview are added to the marks obtained in the Main Exam to determine the final ranking of the candidates. The final result of the UPSC CSE is declared in April or May every year.
